 A serial rapist was given 11 life sentences for rape and 363 years for other serious charges by the North West High Court, which was convening at Klerksdorp Regional Court.

A jury found 43-year-old Johannes Ontsheketse Tshabile guilty of 65 crimes, including attempted murder, theft, rape, robbery with aggravating circumstances, robbery, attempted robbery, assault, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), attempt to commit a sexual offense, and sexual assault. In addition, he was listed as the province's most sought criminal. He also occasionally assaulted couples, attacking the males first, then stealing and raping their companions after they had left the area.

A 65-year-old woman and a 15-year-old daughter were among his victims. The court also heard that Tshabile occasionally had an unidentified accomplice who did the same crimes with him.


His DNA was used to connect him to the crimes. Colonel Adéle Myburgh, the spokesperson for the North West police, stated that Tshabile was taken into custody in 2019 after a thorough police investigation.

He was remanded in jail after being refused bail.

With the help of a police officer, he also succeeded in making his getaway from the Wolmaransstad police station. The police officer was later charged with a crime, removed from duty, and had him detained again. The legal case is still underway. Amidst the emotional, physical, and psychological anguish endured by the victims, Advocate Riekie Krause pleaded with the court to impose the mandatory life term without modification.

Judge Tebogo Djadje concurred with the State, stating that the court should guard society against predators of this kind, particularly if the victims have been living in dread for over six years. She called Tshabile a heartless man who showed no consideration for women or children.
